Race Car Graduation Quilt

5/3/2017

Some of my favorite quilts to make are quilts that will be gifted as a surprise.  This giant, queen sized, quilt was just given as a college graduation present.  It has approximately 50  (YES, 50!) t-shirts representing a ton of activities their son participated in since childhood.  My client was hoping for the main colors to be red, white, and blue.  Since so many of the shirts were white, I added red sashing, and blue binding.  It's quilted with a flame pattern to represent his current passion, race car driving.  I'm really pleased with the manly look we accomplished on this.

Thanks to the family for sharing this awesome photo of the big reveal.

Camp Agawak t-shirt quilt of memories

4/17/2017

With just two months until the start of Camp Agawak's 2017 summer this tee-shirt quilt is headed to it's owner.  Her shirts from many years of camp will be packed in her trunk this year BUT they will be in the form of a super cool, one of a kind, blanket!  I really hope she enjoys sharing all of her favorite camp memories with her bunkmates.

Many years ago I was part of Agawak's "white team."  I'm so excited for this quilt to make it to camp to spread some spirit .......GO BLUE AND WHITE!

Race Car T-Shirt Quilt

This quilt is so much more than just a "race car quilt" but that made for a cool title.  Over 40 t-shirts (see last photo) make up this queen size quilt.  It's going to be a college graduation gift for a guy who has been into so many exciting activities over the years, starting with gymnastics around age 7. Also included are snow skiing, volunteering, rock concerts, AND race car driving.  My client asked for a "red, white, and blue palette" and I think this was accomplished by using red sashing and blue binding.  I hope he loves it!

Finishing a memory quilt for Mayim Bialik

10/10/2016

I’m so excited to finally write about my latest project that I’ve been keeping under wraps for a long time…..a memory quilt for Mayim Bialik!

Mayim, of The Big Bang Theory, and I have a friend in common who put the two of us in touch.  Five years ago Mayim actually began hand sewing a memory quilt for her sons using some of their baby clothes and other meaningful textiles.  Unfortunately, she was forced to stop after a significant car accident and hand surgery left her unable to finish it.  That’s where I come in.

Finishing a memory quilt that someone else has started is no joke.  It's seriously a sensitive business.  Mayim had already put so much time, energy, and love into her small patchwork quilt.  I think we were both a bit nervous for her to hand it over to me.  That said, we talked through every step of the process, including pattern design and color choices, making sure we were on the same page.  I know it was difficult for Mayim when I disassembled the quilt top but, ultimately, it was important to strengthen the fabrics so that the quilt would hold its shape and be structurally sound for many years to come.

Mayim mailed me the original unfinished quilt top plus an eclectic mix of other textiles that had sentimental value including a bright blue sari, orange tulle, and purple cashmere sweater material.  It was challenging but totally fun to piece these new materials together with the tiny 3” x 3” original quilt blocks. I’m so thrilled that I had the opportunity to collaborate with Mayim to reimagine and make this keepsake for her family.  I’m so pleased with the result and I hope they enjoy it forever.

Mayim has also blogged about this memory quilt.  You can read about her experience here on Kveller.

Henry's Quilt - 10 years of clothes

4/14/2016

Henry's mom always knew she wanted to make a memory quilt and she saved up his clothes from day one,  After handing over a huge collection of clothing, his mom was cracking me up; continuing to add "just a few more" items as he outgrew them during the design process!  This project includes Henry's hospital blanket, security blanket, pajamas, a necktie and TONS of t-shirts.  I love that you can see his growth over time in the entirety of this quilt.  Its a huge one and I hope that Henry enjoys using it on his bed for many years and takes it to college!

Camp Birch Knoll T-Shirt Quilt

Although I don't personally like surprises, I love them for others!  This quilt was ordered by a mom for her daughter's final year at summer camp.  She sent me years of t-shirts, pajamas, sweatshirts, headbands, and even a laundry bag.  I really like all the personalization on this quilt including her own handwriting in sharpie marker that was on the laundry bag, and the handmade graffiti style headbands.

Hexagon Memory-Mini

Four toddler dresses provided material for this super cool tiny quilt wall hanging (aka - MEMORY-MINI). Next up, one for her little brother...

Lucas & Logan

9/24/2014

A friend of mine has two adorable little boys.  Even though they are still very small, they have already outgrown a bunch of clothing.  Their mom wanted a way to display the fabric from these onesies and t-shirts in a fun and meaningful way.

Since their family lives by the water, and they love boating, I designed these two mini wall hangings to be displayed in the boys' room.  The background is new cotton fabric but every other detail was created from clothing that one or both boys wore.   Each sail, fish, airplane, etc will remind their parents of this amazing and crazy time in their lives.

I'm so glad that I was able to make these mini quilts.  I hope the boys like their new wall art!

Camp Agawak t-shirt quilt

6/7/2014

Just in time for summer!  Here is the completed Camp Agawak t-shirt quilt.  This design allowed for most of the writing and images on the t-shirts to remain intact, and I love the splash of yellow!  The quilt captures the memories from 10 summers in the great outdoors, but will blend in perfectly with a sleek modern city apartment.  I hope you love it, camper!

Summer is right around the corner!
It's the perfect time to transform camp t-shirts into a bunk bed worthy quilt.

Below are just some of the shirts that will be included
in a quilt for a former camper and counselor at Camp Agawak.
It will capture the memories from 10 summers!

Check back soon to see it completed...
