Henry's mom always knew she wanted to make a memory quilt and she saved up his clothes from day one, After handing over a huge collection of clothing, his mom was cracking me up; continuing to add "just a few more" items as he outgrew them during the design process! This project includes Henry's hospital blanket, security blanket, pajamas, a necktie and TONS of t-shirts. I love that you can see his growth over time in the entirety of this quilt. Its a huge one and I hope that Henry enjoys using it on his bed for many years and takes it to college!
This memory quilt is unique because it's not the typical mix of t-shirts or baby clothes. The fabric is all remnants from an old textile company that belonged to my client's grandfather. There were so many colors, patterns, and textures - I just couldn't wait to get my hands on them. As I worked, I kept imagining what each fabric might have been used for so many years ago. I'm posting today for a couple of reasons. 1 - I love the way this random photo turned out (the negative space, the detail of the fibers, etc) 2 - I'm continuing to learn how to improve my tech skills (and therefore my website). I'm hoping that I was successful in setting up Facebook comments to reflect here when I share a blog post. If you are still reading (Hi there) would you please consider leaving a comment so I can see whether or not it worked? Thank you!
In between quilts I've been working on a secret project. I forget how much I enjoy embroidering but for the last few weeks I've been stitching away in front of the TV at night. Just a few days to go and I can share a completed photo with you. A Christmas gift for GrandmaThis stylish quilt is made from a huge collection of onesies and other baby clothes. My client was looking for a clean, modern look, and this pattern perfectly highlights each of the small images. With the rush to mail before Christmas, I wasn't able to properly photograph so the pictures really don't do this one justice. It always amazes me how without even knowing the child/families personally, I feel such a connection by the time the quilt is finished after hours of pouring over each detail of the garments. Merry Christmas to you all and I hope that grandma loves her gift! Long Island City is the coolest! Come join me there on December 12th from 11:00 - 5:00. Modern Spaces is hosting a holiday popup. I'll be there along with several other NYC area vendors. My loot will include a ton of handmade up-cycled items like quilts, flag banners, pillow cases, tooth fairy envelopes, and headbands. Plus, I'll be available to discuss custom memory quilts and answer any and all questions.
Here's the info: 4742 Vernon Blvd. Long Island City This project has been in the works for a while but it was a SURPRISE! I'm so excited to share it now. My client secretly took her husband's eclectic t-shirt collection out of the house and brought it to me. After listening to her talk excitedly about her husband and his many interests and talents, we decided on a quirky fun design. The quilt top is made up of many t-shirts (music, sports, movies, medical associations) and the back contains 6 shirts that my client wanted to keep whole. I can't think of a more perfect anniversary gift (especially since several of the shirts were related to when they met). I hope that the reveal is exciting and that the whole family enjoys this gift. Congratulations on many years together! It doesn't take a zillion t-shirts to create a meaningful memory quilt. This sweet gift for a grandma was made using just 3 tiny shirts and an infant hat. Five years ago these clothes were gifts from grandma to baby. Now that he is entering kindergarten, the family asked me to use them to create a special keepsake for her. This quilted wall hanging is the result. On the back is a personalized quilt label made by transferring the boy's handwriting with embroidery. There is a great article that just came out in NY Metro Parents listing "16 Unique Gifts for Kids All Made in NYC." I'm so thrilled that my quilts made the cut being described as "most nostalgic gift." There are a ton of other amazing local artisans featured. If you have a minute take a look at them.

This quilt was ordered by a mom for her daughter's final year at summer camp. She sent me years of t-shirts, pajamas, sweatshirts, headbands, and even a laundry bag. I really like all the personalization on this quilt including her own handwriting in sharpie marker that was on the laundry bag, and the handmade graffiti style headbands. In case you noticed that it's been awhile since I posted, it's because I've been preparing for my first ever craft show! Greenwoodstock is in Brooklyn this coming Sunday. I'm so excited! I'll be there to talk about custom memory quilts and to answer questions. Plus I'll be selling a bunch of repurposed textile baby quilts, pillows, tooth fairy envelopes, and more. Also, I just might have a bowl of free candy...how can you pass that up? Come on by NYC pals and say hello!
